BANGUED, Abra (April 16) - Congressional candidate Joseph Sto. Niño Bernos and two other local officials running for office, turned in several firearms of various caliber to Abra police, in yet the biggest arms surrender from a politician in the province.
Bernos, who comes from a big political clan, is the town mayor of La Paz, and is seeking the congressional seat under the National Unity Party (NUP). He turned in six M4 assault rifles to Abra police director Senior Supt. Antonio Bartolome for safekeeping as his commitment to a peaceful and orderly elections.
Also, Barangay chairman Willord Lacangan Reyes of Pantoc village turned over for safekeeping a 5.56 Elisco rifle, while former San Isidro town mayor Ernesto Pacsa also surrendered two Norinco Sentinel shotguns and a US Garand rifle.
Recently, newly assumed Regional Special Operations Task Group (RSOTG) Commander Chief Supt. Robert Quenery took over the helm of the provincial police after Abra was declared “area of immediate concern” by the Comelec.
